SMARTER
SUSTAINABILITY
Across the global travel industry, sustainability is no longer a sideline initiative but
a driver of growth and profit: better for the environment, better for guests and better
for business.
defined by token measures such as banning
plastic straws, it is now recognised as
a core driver of both guest satisfaction
and profitability. There is an industry-wide
realisation that sustainability can be better
for the environment, better for guests, and
better for business. Although this hasn’t been
universally adopted, financial results are
driving change.
The Client View
Global surveys such as Virtuoso and the
GSTC consistently highlight the growing
importance of sustainability in travel choices.
Increasingly, travellers weigh a hotel or
destination’s sustainability credentials when
deciding where to stay. This is not a passing
trend but an enduring shift, strongest among
younger generations of affluent travellers who
see sustainability as part of luxury itself.
The immediate gains come from operational
efficiency. Smarter design reduces energy,
water and food waste without compromising
comfort. Even small shifts, such as replacing
breakfast buffets with à la carte menus, lower
costs while reflecting client demand for
personalisation. These efficiencies accumulate
year after year, protecting margins and freeing
resources for reinvestment.
Not every one of our clients demands it, far
from it, yet engagement is rising steadily.
Some still view sustainability as peripheral
or unimportant, while others ask detailed
questions and make choices accordingly.
What stands out is that interest is not limited
to environmental impact alone. Innovation
in sustainability is seen as a hallmark of
quality, creativity, and long-term vision,
as well as a reason to travel. For many,
a resort’s sustainable practices signal
a broader commitment to excellence.
Travellers increasingly expect a genuine
sense of place and sustainability naturally
supports this demand. Sourcing locally is
both environmentally responsible and a way
to enhance authenticity, while potentially
reducing costs. Community partnerships
further enhance authenticity, support local
economies, and provide richer storytelling
narratives that add meaning and long-term
brand value.
